One of my favorite quotes is, “We only have teachers.” Looking at life from this point-of-view is so powerful it can transform a rough day into a great one and a frustrating client into your best client. With clients specifically, our toughest cases end up being the clients who teach us the most. Each unique experience lends a lesson—from boundaries, project due dates, or working with someone new, there is always an opportunity for growth.
Rather than fixating on what’s wrong, take pride in small success and celebrate those goals. Concentrating on the problem makes it evolve into a larger issue, whereas concentrating on the solution brings a greater chance of success, serenity, and overall accomplishment. Showing up, challenging ourselves, and aiming to do our best is a huge feat.
Regardless of the tangible outcome, these actions are what makes a difference. For example, if you go after a promotion but don’t get the job, it is still a positive experience. Celebrate the fact that you challenged yourself and allowed yourself to be vulnerable and grow.
If you’re feeling nervous about an upcoming presentation or meeting you can stop and ask yourself, “What is it that I’m so afraid of?” Take a moment and write down what is causing your fear. From there, go down the line and evaluate, “Then what happens?”. If you don’t get the promotion, then what? What are you afraid of? There is never anything too great that you won’t be able to handle. Maybe this job wasn’t the best match for you and by not getting the promotion you’ll discover your true passion and talents. Experiences are valuable regardless of the outcome.
So take a deep breath when work gets busy and nerves set in. Don’t focus on fear, focus on going to the next level. Stepping out of your comfort zone is where the magic happens.
